Gonzalez Tabbed to Lead Wesleyan Volleyball Program

MACON, Ga. - Wesleyan College selected veteran coach Orlando Gonzalez to further the re-vitalization of the school's volleyball program.

Adding coaches with impressive collegiate experience continues with the hire of Gonzalez. He brings six years of head coaching experience to Porter Gymnasiumhaving  served three-year stints at NCAA Division I member Rutgers University and Division II member Michigan Tech. Gonzalez also logged three years of assistant coaching time at the collegiate level and 11 years of club and scholastic team leadership.

"I am very honored in the faith that President Ruth Knox and Athletics Director Patty Gibbs have placed in me to be the next servant leader for Wesleyan athletics and the volleyball program," stated Gonzalez.  "Coaching is what I love to do, and the excitement for me in coaching the Division III athlete will be working with those who truly play for the love of the game while earning a great education in the process."

During his tenure at Rutgers, Gonzalez led the Scarlet Knights to their best RPI finish since 2004 while registering the second highest team grade point average in the Rutgers athletics department. At Michigan Tech, he led the team to the NCAA National Championship while mentoiring six all-conference selections and nine all-academic honorees.

Prior to joining Wesleyan, Gonzalez served one year as the assistant coach at Division I Kennesaw State. He joins Mike Walton (basketball) and Dickey Hightower (softball) as head coaches with Division I experience on the Wesleyan staff.

"I want to acknowledge former coach J.D. McAllister for his hard work and dedication leading the return of volleyball to Wesleyan," added Gonzalez.  "We all believe in the great potential for continued growth in the department and our programs.  I hope to contribute with my experience and travels to an already outstanding group of professionals, as well as play a role in the advancement of volleyball in Central Georgia."

Gonzalez is a graduate of Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degrees in Communications and Advertising.
